49TH PARALLEL THEATRE

What do you know about Canadians?... Eh?... Are we just a bunch of people who look and sound basically the same as Americans, huddled up against the United States border, basking in the warmth of the American Ideal? Do we all skate and play hockey, or at least watch it ten months of the year? Do we all drink beer and wear plaid shirts? Who the hell are we?

There are over thirty million of us, sharing this continent with the United States… thousands of us living in the greater Los Angeles area. We think it’s about time you got to hear some of our voices… off the ice!

OUR MANDATE

49th Parallel Theatre’s mission is to enhance Canadian cultural presence in Los Angeles by producing Canadian plays, translations and adaptations for Los Angelinos. These will be plays, new and old, that speak to an international audience. Stories that allow us to laugh at our shared joys, cry at our shared woes, celebrate our similarities, accept, and ultimately rejoice in our differences.

SEED SEASON

49th Parallel Theatre will launch our “seed season” in February 2006, doing a monthly play-reading series, of 5 plays, produced in association with The Playwrights Guild of Canada and will mount our first production, The Good Life, by award winning director and playwright, Daniel Brooks, in March 2006. This begins our five year plan. We will start small, and build the theater along with our audience.

OUTREACH IN THE COMMUNITY

49th Parallel Theatre will be developing a community outreach program to attract the most diverse audience possible:
  • for each play produced in the theatre, we will provide a “pay what you can” performance.
  • all productions will include one ACCESS performance, providing American Sign Language interpretation and Audio Description for deaf and visually impaired audiences.
  • each season, beginning in season Two, we will produce one play that will tour schools, libraries and community centers in the greater Los Angeles area.
  • we will hold acting and improvisation workshops for adults.
Our goal is to build an audience in L.A., for Canadian plays, not only for the several thousand Canadians living here, but also the native Los Angelinos who have no idea about Canadian culture. We aim to educate, enlighten, and most importantly, entertain!
